Dover Castle's Architecture is Truly Impressive

As you walk in, you'll be amazed by how big and fancy the place looks. They started building it in the 1000s when William the Conqueror was in charge. But most of what you see now is from the 1500s when King Henry VIII had it done up. Take a good look at the thick stone walls and tall towers - you can see for miles across the sea from up there!

Little details are everywhere, like the fancy shields above the doors, showing how things have changed over the years. This place is packed with stories from nearly a thousand years ago. It started as a small fort but grew and became a home for kings and queens.

Over time, it became really important for keeping invaders out. Some big moments in its history include when Richard the Lionheart stayed here before going off to fight in far-off lands and when Henry VIII made it one of his most important strongholds.

During the Second World War, they changed bits of the castle to help save soldiers from Dunkirk. They built places for soldiers to sleep and tunnels to hide during air raids. You can still see some damage from German bombs.

Since 1987, English Heritage has been looking after it, ensuring people can learn about its past through shows and displays. From battles to wartime adventures, looking around Dover Castle shows you many exciting bits of Britain's history.

Captivating Highlights of Dover Castle

Whether you like old weapons, how people lived in the olden days, or how they kept places safe, there are loads to see at Dover Castle. You can look at the fancy bedrooms in the big tower from the 1400s. You can learn about life for soldiers by seeing the kitchens and stables. There are defences from all different times, like the big gate they built to keep attackers out.

There are special trails and fun sheets to help kids learn. You can go underground to see tunnels dug by the Romans ages ago. Even some really old Roman paint still on the walls in some tunnels inside the castle shows you what they would have looked like back then.

  • Outstanding historical architecture spanning over 1000 years
  • Interactive exhibits shedding light on its military and royal role
  • A unique chance to enter tunnels dug during different periods
  • The evocative room displays transportation you back through time
  • Spectacular views of Dover's coastline and out to France on clear days
  • Educational trails and activities for children are included in the entry fee
  • Regular events run by English Heritage, such as battle reenactments

Dover Castle Visiting Guidance

To make the most of your time at Dover Castle, we recommend allowing at least 3 hours to explore. The Great Tower bedrooms and Roman paint collections are particularly popular, so expect queues at busy times. Be sure to invest sufficient time if participating in activities or tunnel walks, too.

  • Dress for the changeable weather and bring a light, waterproof jacket.
  • Pack a small backpack with water, snacks and any essentials for younger visitors.
  • Download English Heritage's Explore History app before visiting for audio guides.
  • Take numerous photos, but be mindful of other visitors around you.
  • Ask at the Information Centre if any activities have waiting lists that day.
  • Utilise the wheelchair-accessible routes if needed, as well as rest benches along trails.
  • Consider purchasing quality exclusive merchandise from the onsite shop.
  • Some areas may be closed for maintenance; check website alerts before setting off.
  • Don't forget to explore the clifftop outer ward for scenic views, too.
