History at Birkenhead Priory & St Mary’s Tower

When you arrive in Birkenhead a starting point is the Priory. Established around 1150 the Priory provided shelter to Benedictine monks who cared for travellers for over four centuries and oversaw the regular ferry service across the Mersey River until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538.

When William Laird, a shipbuilder, from Scotland, came to Birkenhead in the 1800s he had plans. He enlisted the services of James Gillespie Graham, an architect from Edinburgh to create a square. The outcome was Hamilton Square, an example of architecture featuring sandstone townhouses that each possess unique characteristics.

Today this tranquil haven amidst the hustle and bustle of Birkenhead provides a spot for relaxation, contemplation and admiration of the bronze statue honouring John Laird, who served as Birkenhead's Member of Parliament. Ferry Across the Mersey
