A Journey to Conquer Three Iconic Mountains
The beautiful Lake District is home to some of the UK's most breathtaking scenery. Its pastoral valleys offer a glimpse into tradition and countryside life, which have been unchanged for centuries. Right next to the rolling hills are three imposing mountains - Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough - that have long challenged hikers with their rugged terrain and stunning views.
Together, they form the epic National Three Peaks Challenge route. Many fitness enthusiasts aim to climb all three peaks, totalling around 25 miles and 5,000 feet of ascent, within 12 hours to fully immerse themselves in the raw natural beauty of this special corner of England. It truly is an experience like no other.
Does taking on these mountains fill you with excitement and nerves? Our minibus is here to ease your mind, allowing full concentration on the physical test without worries of travel logistics between the fells. You'll always have the support needed to achieve this momentous accomplishment and memories to cherish.
Inspiring Sights on the Three Peaks Route
Beyond the familiar adrenaline rush of conquering each peak, the Three Peaks route gifts hikers with stunning, ever-changing vistas of Yorkshire's natural treasures. Here are just a few highlights you'll witness:
Pen-y-Ghent Summit
At 694m, the lowest but steepest peak rewards with panoramas of Ingleton, the Howgills and far into the Dales.
Malham Cove
This colossal wooded amphitheatre rises over 200 ft tall, cut from carboniferous limestone over millennia.
Whernside's Summit Plateau
Yorkshire's highest point outside the Pennines, at 736m height, offers sweeping views up to 25 miles on a clear day.
Ribblehead Viaduct
An iconic 24-arch structure towers 70 ft above the valley, crossing over 4 miles of scenic countryside.
Three Peaks Countryside
Lush pastures dotted with stone barns and dry stone walls define the distinctive limestone landscape.
So, while pushing physical limits is rewarding, don't forget to enjoy the beautiful Yorkshire environments that make this adventure truly memorable. We'll ensure you have the maximum opportunity to do just that.
3 Peaks Challenge Must-Know Dates & Timings
For those unaware, the 3 Peaks challenge is a 25-mile route with a 12-hour hike and is an extreme test for mentally and physically. If you are truly capable of enduring the pain and thrill, here are all the details that you need to know for the challenge:
- April to September: Registration opens at 6 am, and competitors must finish by 6 pm.
- October to March: Registration opens at 8 am, finishing cutoff is 8 pm.
Registration is completed at the Three Peaks visitor centre in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, where you'll receive an official time card to be stamped at each summit. Standard entry costs £5-10 depending on the month.
Here are some key three peak timings to be aware of when planning your challenge:
- Late March to October: Best conditions, longer daylight hours and temperate weather. Most popular time.
- Mid-June to August: Peak visitor season, trails can be busier.
- January and February: Most testing under short daylight and potential wintry hazards.
- Easter weekend: Exceptionally high visitor numbers, trails very busy.
- First Saturday of September: Annual Three Peaks Race day, trails extremely congested.
Note: Some areas have restrictions on wild camping. Peak District authorities advise not starting after 2 pm between October and March due to significantly reduced daylight.
Tips for Three Peaks Challenge Preparation
With the right preparation, you'll get the most from the awe-inspiring scenery and rich sense of accomplishment. Here are our recommended tips:
- Train specifically for endurance with hilly terrain where possible in final training blocks
- Pack equipment checklists in waterproof bags and carry necessary layers, food and first aid kit
- Use mapped routes, be aware of potential hazards like unstable scree slopes
- Leave an itinerary with someone tracking your route completion
- Carry a charged mobile phone only for emergencies
- Wear sturdy, broken-in boots and bring spares in case of blisters
- Pace carefully and take hydration and fuel seriously on the long trek
- Allow extra time for photos at the summits!
