Everything To Know About Baldock

Baldock, a market town located in Hertfordshire, England dating back to the era of the Romans. Its notable landmarks like St Mary's Church and Baldock High Street showcase its captivating heritage.

The town offers immense exploration opportunities with its history at the Baldock Museum, where ancient artefacts are on display. Additionally, there are plenty of parks and gardens in Baldock, for relaxing walks and enjoying nature.

Baldock Town History

While historical records indicate Baldock's significance as a settlement there is no evidence available regarding its specific name during that era.

Established formally as a market town in 1140 by the Knights Templar, Baldock got its name from Baldacci, a term for Baghdad used during Mediaeval times. The Knights Templar likely named the town in connection to their preparations for capturing Baghdad during the Crusades.

Baldock and Beer

Over the history, Baldock has seen much of its prosperity linked to the brewing industry. The region was renowned for its top-notch ale leading to the emergence of Georgian coaching inns and structures, within the town.

Baldock's malts were highly regarded as some of the finest in England. With the growing number of travellers along the Great North Road, several small breweries were added in Baldock to serve both locals and visitors making it a favoured stopover spot.

One of the notable destinations includes The Old White Horse Inn, which was a meeting place for writers, poets and artists until around the 1880s.

Modern Baldock

In the century Baldock was once home to the Full Fashioned Hosiery Company, which later became the Kayser Bondor ladies' stocking factory. During World War II the company paused its production to manufacture parachutes. While the Art Deco facade of the factory still stands, the building transformed into a supermarket in the 1980s.

Some of the historic coaching inns remain intact. The Pryor Court malting mill has been repurposed since then. Notably, many of the elegant and thriving houses from that era still grace the town centre.

Interestingly Baldock served as a spot for residents and workers constructing Letchworth Garden City a short distance away. Since this new garden city lacked pubs Baldocks numerous inns benefited greatly from this situation!
