Alnwick Castle History & Facts

Alnwick Castle shares a history as rich and memorable as its architecture suggests. Over subsequent centuries, the Percys steadily expanded the castle's protection and luxury. During the Wars of the Roses period in the late 15th century, military fortifications grew under the leadership of 'Hotspur' Harry Percy.

He added towers, defensive walls and the stunning Great Hall, many of which still dominate the property. As England entered the modern era, the interests of the Percy owners diversified, reflected today in the surrounding parklands and greenhouses.

The earliest sections are built in typical thick-walled Norman style with rounded arches. Over subsequent centuries, masonry structures, including towers and battlements, were added in a Gothic Revival style.

New details continue to emerge thanks to ongoing archaeological investigations, too. With almost a thousand years of accumulated history, this location invites exploration into the lives and times of those who called this revered building home.
