A Little History of Southend on Sea

Southend-on-Sea is an Essex, England, seaside tourist town. Since the 19th century, visitors have flocked to this north side of the Thames Estuary location. Originally a little fishing community, its sandy beaches and Victorian pier helped it to develop into a busy coastal resort.

Royal Terrace is the first deliberate attempt at Southend as a coastal resort. In the 1960s, Victoria Avenue underwent substantial renovation, which included the conversion of a former brickworks sandpit into Churchill Gardens, a new public park. This park's sunken design has become a popular reprieve from the heavy traffic on Victoria Avenue. The gardens were called Churchill Gardens after Sir Winston Churchill, who died in 1965.

  • Southend Museum

Southend Museum was constructed in 1905-6 for £9,374 and originally housed Southend Library. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-born American immigrant who made his fortune in the steel industry, donated the funds for the building. Carnegie later sold his company and contributed 90% of his income to cultural, educational, and scientific pursuits for "the improvement of mankind." He spent approximately $55 million to construct more than 2,509 libraries in the English-speaking globe, gaining the epithet "Patron Saint of Libraries."
